"Whatever happens, A Girl of Your Age, the first feature film, will be what can be understood by revelation. A debut by a Portuguese filmmaker as has not been seen for a long time.
The film is a test tube on the paths of narrative in a kind of bifurcation between reality and fiction. It is written in socks with Mariana Sampaio, who is also the protagonist (it also makes sense to believe that she is an actress with the grace of a camera) and stages a series of portraits of a Portuguese youth of these days, somewhere bent before the disenchantment of the crisis and a certain emotional detachment. Laranjeira talks about his generation and leaves in the air what it is like to be a young "tuga". His cinema has an aesthetic charm and grabs us with an elliptical narration, almost effortlessly and in which the actors (and not actors) invent their dialogues. In the greatest of simplicities, it points out new ways of storytelling in cinema. It is a film that could hit a huge majority of young people these days if it premiered. (...)
