After having postponed the opening in Aveiro because of the covid, Mercadona continues the expansion plan for 2020: opened 3 of the 10 stores planned
Mercadona is preparing to open on July 15 the 13th supermarket of the Spanish chain in Portugal. It will be in Penafiel that will open the third supermarket out of 10 that the chain plans to open this year.
“We continue to move forward with our expansion plan in Portugal and this supermarket is yet another source of pride. Arriving in a new city is an opportunity to showcase our company model and our product offering in order to win the trust of more customers. The Mercadona project in Portugal continues to grow and has now reached Penafiel, a historic city that fits perfectly with the company's objectives due to the great opportunities it represents ”, says Joana Ribeiro, Mercadona's Regional Director for External Relations Northern Portugal.
Located at Rua Professor Diogo Freitas do Amaral, nº 218, Guilhufe, in Penafiel, the store has a sales area of 1.650 m2 and 145 parking spaces and will create 60 new jobs. The chain marked on July 2 the first full year of operation in Portugal, which started with the opening of the first store in Canidelo, three years after announcing its entry into the country.
As of 2021, Mercadona's expansion plan in Portugal wants to move to the opening of 20 spaces each year, twice what it has done so far. There is a goal to reach 150 supermarkets.
