Initiative takes place on the weekend of 27 and 28 June

Due to the impossibility of collecting food goods in large hypermarket areas, due to Covid-19, several projects are ongoing until the end of July.

With the pandemic, more Portuguese were vulnerable to the situation of food shortage, so aid cannot stop and must be reinforced. With the cancellation of the food collection in May 2020 and the impossibility of having volunteers present in commercial spaces, for security reasons, Banco Alimentar do Porto is promoting a set of initiatives.

In this way, Banco Alimentar do Porto appeals to Porto residents to contribute to the “Festa da Partilha” initiative, taking place this weekend, in various public places in the Porto district councils.

Another ongoing initiative, also on the 27th and 28th of June, it is the “Campanário” which promotes the raising of food goods in Catholic, Protestant religious communities and in the Israeli Community of Porto district.

In addition to this action, Banco Alimentar do Porto also calls on its volunteers to contribute to “Porto d'Apoio” with collections in their circles of friends, family and other local community. Thus, the initiative is benefited by the network of volunteers spread throughout the district of Porto and in which the fundraising will be weighed and communicated to each of the volunteers.

António Cândido da Silva, President of Banco Alimentar do Porto, clarifies that “although the usual food collection campaign does not take place, in order to safeguard the health of volunteers and out of respect for the community, hunger does not stop. We are committed to the most needy. Because sharing tastes good and sharing is a PARTY. ”

In 2019, Banco Alimentar do Porto collected more than 4.5 thousand tons of food goods and assisted 300 social solidarity institutions. About 60 thousand needy people had the possibility to receive baskets or meals already made through donations from the Portuguese.

The Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome do Porto Association was formed in 1994 with the mission of fighting hunger for the most disadvantaged and food waste. Based on volunteering and solidarity, Banco Alimentar Contra a Fome is a non-profit association.
