38 of the 381 beaches classified with “Golden Quality” are located in the district of Porto
For the 2020 bathing season, the environmental association Quercus rated 381 Portuguese beaches with “Golden Quality”, 38 of which are located in the district of Porto.
Of the total beaches awarded “Golden Quality”, 321 are coastal beaches, 54 are inland beaches and 6 are transition beaches.
The attribution of the beach rating with “gold quality” obeys the criteria for assessing bathing water, which must be classified as excellent in the last five bathing seasons (2015 to 2019) and must not have registered any type of episode of advice against the practice bathing or beach ban in the last year.

This year, the bathing season will be different and Quercus “considers it essential” the compliance with health rules on beaches, outlined by the Directorate-General for Health and calls for “a timely planning of trips to the beaches, in order to avoid accumulations in the sand and access to the bathing areas, by consulting the InfoPraia mobile application of the Portuguese Environment Agency”.
Vila Nova de Gaia stands out as the municipality with more beaches with “Golden Quality” from all over the country, together with Albufeira, with a total of 18 beaches.
In addition to all these beaches in Gaia, there is also the well-known Blue Flag distinction.
